A Qualitative Study on the User Experience of Manual/Electric Hybrid Wheelchairs in Leisure Activity Participation: Focusing on Focus Group Interview

Abstract

|
Objective: The purpose of this study was to understand the user’s usage experience through a focus groupinterview and to find out what factors to consider when developing manual/power hybrid wheelchairs andprescribing manual/power hybrid wheelchairs by clinicians.
Methods: Five people with disabilities who have used manual/power hybrid wheelchairs were recruited. Interviewquestions were based on the questionnaire presented by Krueger & Casey. Conversational data were transcribedindependently by three authors. The transcribed data were then analyzed in accord with the procedures presentedby Braun and Clarke.
Results: The subjects conducted various activities in the community, including occupational activities, leisureactivities, and overseas activities. However, wheelchair users reported problems with wheelchair propulsionstructures, supporting structures, and materials. Thus, they hoped to improve the existing manual/power hybridwheelchair problems, and to include accessories such as chest belts and anti-tippers for safe driving. As a resultof the study, opinions on the safety of manual/powered hybrid wheelchairs for active leisure participation wereparticularly emphasized.
Conclusion: This study presented the experiences of manual/power hybrid wheelchair users during leisure andsocial participation activities from the perspective of clinicians. This study will serve as the basis for thedevelopment of highly effective assistive technology devices.
